The Syrian President met with his French counterpart

Jacques Chirac and with Prime Minister Lionel Jospin on

                            Tuesday.

Earlier, Mr. Assad said remarks he made last month

during a papal visit to Syria which led to accusations of

anti-Semitism were not directed against all Jews, but only

                            against Israel.

Members of the Paris City Council disrupted the official

welcome for Mr. Assad Tuesday, holding up signs and

calling him an "anti-Semite." Meanwhile, in Paris and

Marseilles, several thousand Lebanese and French

Jewish demonstrators also protested Mr. Assad's

three-day visit to France. France's Lebanese community

has called for a complete withdrawal of all Syrian troops

                            from Lebanon.

CALGARY - Just days after saying it may unload

its Sudanese interests, Talisman Energy is

making moves in the oilfields of Malaysia and

                    the North Sea.

Talisman said Thursday it will bid $529 million

for Lundin Oil AB of Sweden. The deal already

has the support of Lundin's board of directors

and the Lundin family, which owns 26.6 per

                    cent of the takeover target.

If the deal goes through, Talisman said all of of

Lundin Oil's current interests in Sudan and

Russia will be conveyed to a newly formed

spin-off company, the shares of which will be

distributed to holders of Lundin Oil shares on

a one-for-one basis. The new spin-off will be

managed by the current Lundin Oil

                    management team.
